Get to Know Ron Hovanes

Ron Hovanes is a dedicated community advocate and former Mayor of Oliver. He currently serves as the co-owner and President of Hovanes Community Services Ltd. – a distinguished agency renowned for its extensive contributions in the South Okanagan and Similkameen regions, specifically in the support of adults and children with diverse abilities. Armed with specialized training in special needs, Ron brings over thirty years of comprehensive experience to his multifaceted roles, having served as a life skills worker, education assistant, employer, and contractor to both the Ministry of Children and Family Development and Community Living BC.

Ron takes pride in his team’s commitment at Hovanes Community Services Ltd. to foster individualized, personalized service for individuals of all abilities. Currently, Ron leads a team of twenty dedicated professionals which serves over fifty families, reflecting his unwavering passion and commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of those with diverse abilities.

Ron has also served on Oliver’s Town council for 16 years – serving 10 years as the Mayor of Oliver. He has also sat on various local and regional boards including:

  • Oliver Heritage Society
  • Okanagan Basin Water Board
  • Regional district of the Okanagan Similkameen
  • Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust
  • Community Advisory Board for the Okanagan Corrections Centre

Ron recognizes the importance of strong relationships with all levels of government and believes that most accomplishments that support citizens throughout the province comes from broad cooperation. Ron understands that with strong elected representation and an engaged provincial government, great things can take place and also acknowledges that volunteers, boards and service clubs are key elements that provide the additional cultural and physical amenities that make our communities so much more livable.

Ron appreciates the work ethic that came from growing up on a mixed fruit farm, time spent in the Canadian Armed Forces, and volunteering in the community. He is also a Past President and Life member of the Royal Canadian Legion and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Oliver. All of these experiences have assisted Ron in many leadership positions.

When not working, Ron enjoys spending time with his wife Tara, his family, traveling, gardening, working with wood and enjoying his community.
