Dr. Michael Humer, born and raised in Vancouver, B.C., embarked on his medical journey at the University of British Columbia, where he completed both his medical training and surgical residency.

His surgical career began in General and Thoracic Surgery in Prince George and Kamloops. Notably, in 2002, Dr. Humer played a pivotal role in consolidating Thoracic Surgical services across British Columbia into centers of excellence through the BC Program of Thoracic Surgical Care. For the past two decades, he has dedicated himself to serving the Interior and Northern regions of B.C., practicing at Kelowna General Hospital (KGH). Since 2003, Dr. Humer has spearheaded the development of the Kelowna Thoracic Surgical site into a national leader in virtual patient consultation services, extending care throughout the Interior, North of B.C., and the Yukon.

Driven by a lifelong passion for health care, Dr. Humer focuses on enhancing access to top-quality care by fostering collaboration among health care providers and actively listening to patients. His dedication to personalized compassionate care led him to complete a MA in Professional Communication from Royal Roads University in 2012, with a thesis on this very subject.

Throughout his career, Dr. Humer has held various leadership positions at KGH, culminating in roles such as Surgical Department Head and Perioperative Medical Director. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Thoracic Surgery, he was honoured with the Canadian Association of Thoracic Surgeons Distinguished Service Award in 2020.

Beyond his medical endeavors, Dr. Humer has served the community in diverse capacities. He was on the board of the Central Okanagan Hospice Association from 2014 to 2020, serving as board president from 2017 to 2019. Currently, he coordinates the Kelowna Terry Fox Run.

Transitioning from surgery, Dr. Humer seeks to bring the same compassion, collaborative spirit, and enthusiasm to address broader issues impacting the people of Kelowna Centre. He feels privileged to reside with his family in the beautiful Okanagan and is eager to serve the constituents of Kelowna Centre as a BC United member of the provincial legislative assembly.
