Leader Kevin Falcon continues to build a strong, united, election-ready team

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tuesday, October 3, 2023

Victoria, B.C. – Today, as the Fall Session commences at the B.C. Legislature, BC United Leader Kevin Falcon reaffirmed his commitment to building a strong and united election-ready team. He proudly introduced Houston Mayor Shane Brienen as the BC United candidate for Nechako Lakes, and further solidified the team by confirming the re-election bids of two current MLAs, Mike Bernier and Dan Davies, in Peace River South and Peace River North.

“Every team needs a mix of experienced and new members, and today I’m thrilled to introduce Mayor Shane Brienen as our newest BC United candidate, and confirm that Mike Bernier and Dan Davies will be seeking re-election,” said Falcon. “Shane’s unwavering commitment to his community, his family, and his relentless determination to deliver better outcomes for his region make him the ideal voice for the people of Nechako Lakes. With a combination of new candidates, like Shane, and experienced, dedicated candidates like Mike and Dan, BC United is well-positioned to defeat the NDP and get the results British Columbians deserve.”

“As a lifelong resident deeply rooted in Houston and its surrounding communities, I see a clear path towards a brighter future for our region. I firmly believe there are significant opportunities for progress in Nechako Lakes that the current government is not fully capitalizing on. I am determined to work every day to lower the cost of living for local families, strengthen mental health and addiction services, and address the growing healthcare crisis,” said Breienen. “As a father of four, I want to ensure our community thrives for this generation and the next, which means providing better support for our forestry and agriculture sectors and fostering a diversified local economy.”

Brienen has over 36 years of experience in the local forestry industry and a long-standing membership with the United Steelworkers Union. He has dedicated 17 years to local governance, initially as a Councillor and now in his third consecutive term as Mayor of Houston. Furthermore, Brienen serves as a Director on the Bulkley Nechako Regional District Board, the Northwest Regional Hospital Board, and the Northwest BC Resource Benefits Alliance.

Brienen is also a passionate advocate for sports, volunteerism, and outdoor recreation, actively coaching minor hockey, ringette, and senior hockey. He has also contributed extensively to numerous local and regional boards, committees, associations, and clubs.

In addition to introducing Mayor Shane Brienen, Falcon also announced that BC United has now opened nominations in Abbotsford South, where candidates have already indicated their intention to seek the nomination. Nominations for various ridings, including Ladysmith-Oceanside, remain open.

In the weeks ahead, BC United looks forward to announcing more members of its revitalized BC United team, who will join the newly nominated candidates Puneet Sandhar, Wendy Yuan, and Kiel Giddens. British Columbians deserve a government that listens, works tirelessly on their behalf to address critical issues, and delivers tangible results. United, there is a better B.C. is within reach.
