KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Today, BC United announced Highway 5A safety upgrades for the highway corridor between Kamloops and Stump Lake.

“Highway 5A continues to experience significant traffic volumes, including commercial truck traffic,” said Todd Stone, BC United MLA for Kamloops-South Thompson. “We need to address these challenges in a coordinated fashion, and only BC United has a plan to invest in our Interior roads.”

A BC United government will implement the following infrastructure and safety upgrades along the Highway 5A corridor immediately:

  • Implement safety improvements adjacent to, and on, Cardeau Hill including:
  • Widened corners, improved sight lines and fixed to the slump mid-way uphill.
  • Fix to the dangerous corner at Longs Mill on Shumway Lake.
  • Construct a northbound chain-up area by Shumway Lake south of Campbell Creek Road.
  • Construct a chain-off area at the top of Cardeau Hill by Separation Road.
  • Construct a chain-up area at Long Lake Road for Knutsford Hill; install a ‘Do Not Use Jake Brake’ sign on Knutsford Hill (northbound); and install a street light at Knutsford Hall.

“These are much-needed infrastructure and safety improvements that will make Highway 5A much safer for the travelling public and area residents, especially the upgrades related to Cardeau Hill,” added Doug Haughton, TNRD Area L Director.
